Welcome to Addams Elementary School


School Year 2011 - 2012

Jane Addams Elementary School proudly works with students and their families in this Northside neighborhood. With an excellent staff of teachers and support personnel we strive to have the most positive impact on our students’ learning and development.


This year Addams is more streamlined than ever. We have a new principal, Rosana Madrid-Arroyo, who came to us from the principalship at King. Mrs. Arroyo and her team of experienced teacher are facing the challenge of larger class sizes with optimism and, so far, success. Our first trimester English Language (reading comprehension) and Math scores were up at ever grade level over the same period last year. On-going Addams teachers and newly transferred in teachers are working as a cohesive team to accomplish this feat. Classroom teachers who are new to Addams include Mrs. Rosio Sharma (from Kettering), Mrs. Jisela Alcala (from Burroughs). All of our teachers are hardworking and dedicated to teaching our students.


We are critically analyzing our past achievement records to guide us in knowing what to continue and where to improve. This year we are thrilled to have a pilot program for the youngest students at Addams. This program is called Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and early indicators are showing it to be a successful blend of high quality pre-school mixed with age appropriate academic strategies. Mrs. Esperanza Barba is a model teacher for the TK program and has already been visited by other sites from across the district and state.


All of our classes challenge and support our students by offering differentiated instruction in small groups to augment whole group lessons. All instruction is tied to the California Content Standards. Addams also has Excel classes to challenge our high achieving students and prepare them for even greater academic challenges.
